Concussion is defined as a temporary disturbance to brain function caused by a blow to the head, neck or torso. Post concussion symptoms usually settle spontaneously within a few days, however recovery of energy systems within the brain can take as long as 10-28 days, despite full symptom resolution. Thus the new concussion guidelines from the Australian Institute of Sport dictate a mandatory 21 day progressive return to play program before returning to contact sport following a concussion.
A small number of athletes will experience symptoms beyond the first few days. Our physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the systems that may be contributing to ongoing concussion symptoms. This could include assessment of one or all of the following: vestibular (balance), ocular (eye movement), cervical (neck) or autonomic system (regulation of heart rate and blood pressure) depending on your symptom presentation. Once diagnosed a targeted rehabilitation program is provided, as well as comprehensive advice on graduated return to play, school or work.
We recommend athletes who have sustained a potential concussion book in for an assessment as soon as possible following the incident (within 2-5 days). This will assist in accurate diagnosis and appropriate education with the aim of returning you to your sport or occupation as quickly, safely and confidently as possible.
